1850
According to the 1850 census of Thomas Norcliffe Jones, taken in Richmond, Virginia, there was one “Free Inhabitant” in the household:
– Frances Clayton; female, aged 8 years old.
Her race was recorded as “Mulatto”.
– Her occupation was given as “None”.
– She was born in Virginia.
The survey indicates that Frances Clayton can neither read nor write. She is listed on this form as a “Free Inhabitant” (otherwise she would not have been counted), and she is not indicated as being a “servant” by occupation. Unclear about her status, but I feel relatively certain that she was in the employ of the family as a housemaid or kitchen helper.
